Faces of Goreme, 2000
I lived in a small tourist town in the Cappadocia region in central Turkey for a few months in 99/2000. The local men, some of whom became good friends, asked for portraits. There were few art materials available in the local store, and I ended up using the waxy crayon/pastels made for school children.
Before I left Goreme we had a little show of the portraits in a cave bar run by a local artist whose friendship and generosity I have remembered much better than his name. We had the pictures framed in the most perfunctory manner by a local framer. As soon as the two week show finished, the men (or their mothers) grabbed the pictures and took them home to put on the wall.
